Decontamination Project on Pillnitzer Straße: EU and Free State of Saxony Support Remediation for Planned ABX Site Expansion
Minister for the Environment and Agriculture Georg Ludwig von Breitenbuch Visits ABX Site in Radeberg to Present Funding Approval
Radeberg, January 15, 2026 – ABX advanced biochemical compounds GmbH welcomed distinguished guests to its site in Radeberg yesterday. Saxony’s State Minister for the Environment and Agriculture, Georg Ludwig von Breitenbuch, officially presented a funding approval notice supporting a comprehensive soil remediation project at the company’s property on Pillnitzer Straße. The handover took place in the presence of representatives from the state, the district, and the city, including Béla Bélafi, President of the Saxony State Directorate, Radeberg Mayor Frank Höhme, and Maik Hübschmann of the Bautzen District Office.
The soil contamination is the result of the site’s historical use, which previously housed a glassworks until 1928. The remediation project aims to remove these legacy pollutants and create the foundation for a sustainable expansion of ABX’s operations in Radeberg. This will ensure safe and healthy working conditions in the long term. The project is financially supported by the European Union and the Free State of Saxony.
At the heart of the project is a decontamination process involving the replacement of contaminated soil. Large volumes of polluted earth will be excavated and either properly recycled or disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. Any remaining contamination in the subsurface will be professionally secured. The remediation work will be preceded by the demolition of the existing buildings on the site.
Once remediation is complete, at least 15 percent of the restored area will be renaturalized. At the same time, new production facilities will be built in line with modern technical, safety, and energy-efficiency standards. The project will make a significant contribution to the sustainable development of the Radeberg business location and strengthen regional value creation.
“Through this decontamination project, we are making a targeted investment in a safe, modern, and future-ready company site,” said Marco Müller, Managing Director of ABX. “Support from the European Union and the Free State of Saxony allows us to align economic growth with ecological responsibility.”
