Molecule of the month
Pittsburgh Compound B (PiB) precursor - 6-OH-BTA-0

Pittsburgh Compound-B (PIB) is a carbon-11-labelled benzothiazole derivative of the dye thioflavin T and is used for imaging beta-amyloid (Aβ), one of the pathologic hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease.[1] [11C]PiB was the first widely used PET radiotracer with specificity for Aβ aggregates in humans. It has a high affinity and selectivity for Aβ plaques and other Aβ-containing lesions. Despite having been in use for more than 20 years and the approval of several 18F-fluorinated Aβ tracers, it remains the gold standard for Aβ imaging.[2] This is also due to the broad availability of the precursor and reference standards for use in research and development, as well as in defined clinical applications (e.g. approved compassionate use program, IND, IMPD, etc.).
